Long Series Awards
2003 Winter Series IV Black Forest - 20K Black Forest, CO February 22, 2003 Please Note: For the 20K race, somebody removed the course markings that were located near mile 7. This caused some of the faster runners to race more than the 20K distance. One of the runners who knows the course well (Larry Miller) corrected the problem when he arrived at that location by making a directional sign from some nearby logs. We sincerely apologize for the problems. In all the years that we've used Black Forest as a race venue, we've never had any problems with signs being removed. The race director has authorized that times can be adjusted for those runners that ran more than the 20K distance. These results do have the times adjusted. All of the Long Series results have also been updated with the time adjustments. There is a detailed explanation after the women's results on how the times were adjusted. Thanks for all of your feedback. It's always fun to see how passionate everyone is about our sport. If you are an award winner and will not be able to attend the dinner, awards can be picked up Monday, and thereafter, at Performance Awards - 17 South Wahsatch - Colorado Springs. If you signed up to receive a blanket, and were not at the last event, please contact Pat Lockhart and make arrangements to pick it up from her home. Weather: Mostly cloudy, temps in the mid 30s and rising slightly. There was an occassional light wind. Course: Rolling hills on dirt and paved roads. Elevation is about 7000 feet. Most of the course is within the forested area of Black Forest, thus there is some protection from any wind. The exception to this are the latter miles of the 20K course, which is more exposed. There are some terrific views of the Pikes Peak and the Front Range mountains. This was the last race for the 2003 Winter Series. We hope that you enjoyed yourself and pushed hard with each succeeding mile. But it's not over yet. A Winter Series would not be complete without dinner, desserts, an aution and presentation of the awards. So be sure and mark Saturday, March 1st, 6:00 PM on your calendar. This is the Winter Series Awards Dinner and Crazy Auction Night. The main meal (pasta) will be provided for a nominal price. You are encouraged to bring your favorite dessert and share it with others. So we'll eat, have an auction with lots of neat stuff, and present the Winter Series awards. The location is the downtown YMCA in Colorado Springs. From I-25, take the Bijou Exit (Exit # 142). Head east for about 3 blocks and turn left onto Nevada Ave. After about 2 blocks, the YMCA will be on your right. Please RSVP for the dinner portion of the evening so that we know how much food to order. You can RSVP to Pat Lockhart via e-mail at PatLockhart@worldnet.att.net or phone (719) 598-2953. If you have any questions about the results, please send an e-mail to Dave Sorenson at dsorenso@gte.net. If there are others who are interested in learning how to do results, don't be shy. Just give us a holler. If you have other questions about the race, please send an e-mail to the race director, Pat Lockhart, at patlockhart@worldnet.att.net Thanks!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Male Finishers Place Pos/Div Name Age City State Time Team 1 1/11 Andy Bupp 30 Littleton CO 1:16:49 2 2/11 Eric Peterson 31 Colo Springs CO 1:20:08 3 1/10 Todd Murray 39 Colo Springs CO 1:21:03 4 3/11 Brian Kates 31 Colo Springs CO 1:23:04 5 2/10 Rick Hessek 36 Colo Springs CO 1:23:07 6 1/8 Rich Hadley 47 Florence CO 1:23:52 7 1/11 Rick Shoulberg 41 Manitou Spgs CO 1:24:16 8 2/11 Randy Rodman 41 Centennial CO 1:24:44 9 1/4 Matt Connors 29 Colo Springs CO 1:26:19 10 4/11 Michael Schoudel 34 Colo Springs CO 1:26:55 11 1/1 Jason Nykiel 14 Colo Springs CO 1:27:19 Palmer/Cheyenne 12 3/11 Mark Koch 43 Pueblo CO 1:28:22 13 2/8 Jeff Adams 45 Colo Springs CO 1:29:27 14 1/9 Ken Baldrey 50 Denver CO 1:31:09 15 2/9 Larry Miller 52 Colo Springs CO 1:31:53 16 3/8 Dean Sandoval 47 Canon City CO 1:33:39 17 4/11 Jerry Jackson 42 Black Forest CO 1:33:44 18 2/4 Brock LaMeres 26 Colo Springs CO 1:33:57 19 3/9 Eck Zimmermann 51 Monument CO 1:33:59 20 5/11 Neal Oseland 33 Colo Springs CO 1:34:01 21 3/10 Harry Harcrow 35 Woodland Park CO 1:34:44 22 4/9 Stu Nieburg 54 Colo Springs CO 1:35:18 23 5/11 Ben Valdez 42 Pueblo West CO 1:36:06 24 4/10 Mark Walker 37 Colo Springs CO 1:36:45 25 6/11 Jonathan Fitton 33 Colo Springs CO 1:37:37 26 7/11 Joe Giordano 31 Littleton CO 1:37:50 27 8/11 Matt Sherman 30 Pueblo West CO 1:37:58 Clydesdale 28 5/10 Larry Steller 35 Highlands Ranc CO 1:39:37 29 5/9 Dave Diaz 54 Pueblo CO 1:39:56 30 3/4 Jeff Stiner 29 USAFA CO 1:41:31 31 6/10 Mark Baines 39 Fountain CO 1:41:52 32 6/9 David Reily 50 Colo Springs CO 1:42:21 33 7/10 Jeff Angus 37 Fountain CO 1:43:21 34 9/11 Paul Reichart 34 Colo Springs CO 1:44:01 Clydesdale 35 1/2 Russell Reese 24 Monument CO 1:45:40 36 4/8 Sam McClure 49 Canon City CO 1:46:43 37 10/11 Werner Vanzyl 32 Colo Springs CO 1:46:53 38 6/11 Keith Odegard 44 Colo Springs CO 1:48:33 39 8/10 Mike Mastro 39 Centennial CO 1:48:49 40 2/2 David Sexton 23 Westcliffe CO 1:48:58 41 7/11 Ken Stauffer 40 Colo Springs CO 1:49:17 42 1/4 John Moha 58 Buena Vista CO 1:49:52 43 1/3 Ross Westley 66 Arvada CO 1:51:37 Senior 44 8/11 Lee Burton 42 Divide CO 1:52:29 45 2/4 Clyde Landry 56 Colo Springs CO 1:52:51 46 1/2 Hans Zimmermann 63 Monument CO 1:52:55 47 5/8 Rodney Bolman 46 Colo Springs CO 1:55:51 48 2/2 Ed Youngberg 60 Evergreen CO 1:56:02 49 4/4 Kyle Whitney 28 Colo Springs CO 1:56:22 50 9/10 Geoffrey Jarpe 39 Colo Springs CO 1:57:47 51 9/11 Greg Leger 42 Colo Springs CO 1:58:40 Clydesdale 52 6/8 Ed Gleason 47 Colo Springs CO 1:58:58 53 11/11 Dan Grieser 32 Colo Springs CO 1:59:16 54 10/10 Andrew Dunning 39 Colo Springs CO 1:59:36 55 7/9 Don Healer 50 Colo Springs CO 2:02:14 56 2/3 Chuck Fuermann 65 Monument CO 2:03:56 Senior 57 7/8 John Crawford 48 Englewood CO 2:04:36 Clydesdale 58 8/9 Dave Vandenberg 50 Colo Springs CO 2:05:21 59 10/11 Robert Johnson 40 Colo Springs CO 2:10:02 60 1/1 Ed Mighell 72 Denver CO 2:10:10 Senior 61 11/11 Charlie Malin 43 Monument CO 2:13:51 62 3/3 Phil Foster 68 Colo Springs CO 2:19:23 Senior 63 8/8 Bob Johnson 48 Colo Springs CO 2:28:00 RMCPOA 64 3/4 Gordon Denison 59 Colo Springs CO 2:28:03 65 4/4 Brad Breland 56 Centennial CO 2:28:10 66 9/9 Jim Massa 50 Colo Springs CO 2:32:25 Female Finishers Place Pos/Div Name Age City State Time Team 1 1/4 Sheila Geere 39 Colo Springs CO 1:28:33 2 1/3 Penny McDermott 28 Colo Springs CO 1:31:42 3 1/5 Kim Grant 43 Denver CO 1:34:27 4 1/4 Katherine FrankDvorsky 31 Pueblo CO 1:37:39 5 2/5 Susan Schenk 44 Colo Springs CO 1:37:41 6 2/3 Jennifer WheelerBuenge 29 Castle Rock CO 1:38:27 7 2/4 Tamara Rogers 36 Monument CO 1:40:32 8 2/4 Gina Basile 31 Colo Springs CO 1:46:54 9 1/4 Diane Ridgway 54 Arvada CO 1:47:15 10 1/2 Micky Simpson 46 Parker CO 1:53:14 11 3/4 Pilar George 39 Colo Springs CO 1:54:44 12 4/4 Diane Brown 39 Colo Springs CO 1:55:24 13 1/1 Joyce McKelvey 57 Black Forest CO 1:55:36 14 3/4 Leigh Singleton 34 Denver CO 1:58:55 15 2/4 Julie Marshall 54 Canon City CO 2:01:14 16 3/4 Kristine Peterson 50 Denver CO 2:01:33 17 4/4 Molly Hackman 52 Centennial CO 2:02:24 18 3/5 Annie Hamlin 40 Monument CO 2:03:48 19 4/5 Ruth Hiatt 43 Colo Springs CO 2:09:49 20 5/5 Kelly Jackson 42 Colo Springs CO 2:09:54 21 2/2 Jane Chess 49 Florence CO 2:15:31 22 3/3 Kate Simons 28 Colo Springs CO 2:16:34 23 4/4 Martine Ohland 31 Colo Springs CO 2:16:38 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For your reference, the following are the orignal times of all the finishers, without any time adjustments applied. Springs CO ------------------------------------------ And finally, here are the e-mails that I received about this. These are shown so you have an idea of how the time adjustments were derived. ------------------------------------------- Dave, I'm Randy Rodman. I lost 6:30 to 7:00 minutes on my detour. Not to mention the wind taken out of my sails from this. I was on pace to run a 1:24. I was ahead of Rick Shoulberg at the time by about 75 feet. We probably finished close to each other so I would not have over taken him for 1st. I'd appreciate if you'd check with Mark Koch. He was no where near us at that point and ended up 7 seconds ahead of me. I would have over taken that spot. That was the 40-44 mens division. Andy Bupp was he the lead at the time. Probably by over 2:00. He's estimating going 3 miles out of the way. He was running a consistent 6:00 pace yesterday. 18 minutes off. I'm not blaming anyone for this. It was unfortunate. But I am very upset. Randy Rodman -------------------------------------- I love my blanket! Randy (Rodman) -------------------------------------- Dave, You guys are really going out of your way for us by adjusting the times. My time at the 6 mile mark was 41:06. My time at the 8 mile mark was 58:12, so I am thinking that I lost about 3 minutes because I think I was actually averaging close to 7 mins/mile. That would have put me at 8 miles closer to 55:10 or so than 58:12. I was with a couple of guys, one was the young guy, Jason Nykiel, and I think either Rich Hadley or Rick Shoulberg. If they didn't think it was three minutes, then go with whatever they send in. Thanks again, Sheila Geere ------------------------------------------ Dave- I knew something was wrong when the 7th mile never came. I went straight instead of taking left, and continued straight until I reached a 4-way intersection. At that point I knew I was off course and turned around, as did Rick Hessek, who was running alongside me at the time. We both estimate that we ran an additional 3/4 mile to that stop sign, or 1 1/2 miles roundtrip. At the pace we were going (around 6:40), that would be an additional 10 minutes. I was running in 2nd place at the time, and finished well back in around 15th. I applaud you, Pat, and all of the volunteers who put on a high quality event each year, giving up your Saturday in the process without pay. I understand that the event is different things to different people, but for me personally the final result is not nearly as important as the effort that I put into each race, the sportsmanship and comraderie of the other partcipants. All of those objectives were met once again on Saturday, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience despite the disappointment of not knowing what the outcome would have been had the course signs not been removed. Keep up the great work and thanks for all that you do. Regards, Brian Kates --------------------------------------------- Dave, I think I ran about 2 1/2 minutes or more than I should have. It doesn't really affect me and my entry was comped so I'm not concerned about it. No need to spend the time going in and changing it for me. I just thought if you are trying to piece together approximate times for others that this might help you. See you Saturday night!! Neal (Oseland) ----------------------------------------------- Hi Dave, I was one of the people who missed the left hand turn at Bar X Rd. I was running in 5th place at the time, right behind Eric Peterson. I think we added about 1 to 1 1/2 miles total for our mistake. We ran almost all the way down to the next 4 way intersection. Brian Kates and Rick Hessek were just in front of us and the 4 of us all turned around together to run back to the turn and continue on. Don't know if my mistake actually made any difference in my overall standing or not. Todd Murray -------------------------------------------------- Hi Dave, Wow I don't envy your task in this. My preference is to just not adjust any times as we the runners are suppose to know the course. As for how much extra I ran, I am not sure. Brian Kates and Rick Hesseck were about 15 seconds ahead of Todd Murray and myself. We were running 2nd-5th place in the race at the time. I am not sure who was in the lead as he was well ahead of us. I know we didn't run more than 1.5 miles extra(total round trip back to getting on course). But other than that I am not sure. The four of us conferred for a second so maybe the 4 of us should get the same bonus time based on everyones opinion? Eric Peteron ------------------------------------------------- Dear Pikes Peak Road Runners Race Directors / Executives, I appreciate your effort to adjust the results of us 20K race participants who were unfairly led off course. I think this is a very sincere and righteous offer to try and compensate us who were cheated out of a fair race course, but I don't think that there is any accurate and thus fair way to determine the exact amount of time to compensate us. I think that the race should be nullified and withdrawn from the long series. I think that if a racer finished the fourth race then their first three long series times should stand as the long series result. I know that you PPRR Directors and Executives think that some redneck hillbilly sabotaged the course, which I guess could be true, but I really doubt that's what happened. Criminals always have a motive and behavior, and I don't see what a redneck's motive for this crime would be and certainly don't think the behavior is consistent with what such a redneck would do. If a redneck that hates runners did this then he would probably have knocked over the sign and left it sprawled all over the road as a monument to his hatred of runners. I can't see some redneck getting out of his pickup and carefully disassembling the different parts of the marker post and then carefully hiding all presence of the turn marker so that none of the lead runners would see it. This behavior seems more consistent with someone associated with the running race who wants to gain an unfair advantage or make himself (or his friend or spouse) look better in the long or even short results. I can think of all sorts of reasons why someone participating in the long or even the short series would want to throw off the times of the leaders in the 20K race, and these reasons would be very compelling to someone (or the friend or spouse of someone) who actually has something to gain in the long race results or comparative race results of the short to long race or series. If you do insist on adjusting the times of the 20K and then using them to calculate the overall Long Series results, then I'll try to give you my best perception of what happened, but please don't adjust my time unless you make an effort to contact and adjust the times of the competitors surrounding me. When we were running east on Pine Cone road I recollect that the order was close to as follows: 1st The Bould Running Company tank top runner was out of sight 2nd Brian Kates (about 130 meters ahead of me) 3rd Rick Hessek ( about 100 meters ahead of me) 4th Eric Peterson (about 70 meters ahead of me) 5th Guy with purple, pink flowered spandex tights (about 40 meters ahead of me) 6th Randy Rodman (about 20 meters ahead of me) 7th Rick Shoulberg (me) 8th Rich Hadley (probably about 100 meters behind me) Maybe I got the order wrong, but I don't think I missed someone, but I guess it's possible. Please ask these guys to confirm the exact scenario. I was running in 7th with the strung out pack and I thought I heard someone screaming way behind me, but I kept on following the pack, since I didn't know what was going on and it was hard to hear. I ran down the grade of Pine Cone Road and was about 250 meters from the Vollmer Road stop sign and then I could hear better someone yelling and screaming far behind me, so I stopped and stuttered but then resumed running, so now Randy was then about 50 meters ahead of me. Then I was about 200 meters from the stop sign ,and it looked like Brian was almost to the stop sign, and Randy just turned around abrubtly, so I figured we were going the wrong way, so I turned around and went towards the screaming Rich Hadley. Hadley waited for me, but we didn't wait for the 2nd - 6th guys, since they seemed like they had figured out that we all needed to go back. Thus I got an unfair 50 to 260 meter total out-and-back advantage over 2nd - 6th in the pack, but I in turn lost my significant advantage that I had worked hard to build over Hadley. On the way back to the missed turn at Bar X I do not remember seeing any other runners that also missed the turn, but it is possible that there was some others. If there was some other runners they should not be compensated as much as us, and likewise the guys ahead of me should get a little more compensation than me. I looked at an acurate map on the internet, and it looks like from Bar X to Vollmer Road is about just over 1000 meters. Thus the leaders of our pack would have run and extra total out-and-back 2000 meters (1 1/4 miles) while I estimate that I ran at least and extra 1600 meters (1 mile), and Hadley ran less than me. Hadley did stop and wait for me to come back to him, and he went out of his way to retrieve us even though he already knew about the missed turn, so please commend him. Thank you. Rick Shoulberg ------------------------------------------------- Hey Dave --Just got you message on the phone.. Yes I did go a little out of the way not much though probably 3 to 3:30 minutes. It looked like I was in 7th or 8th at the time.. Hope that helps and I would also like to thank you for doing the results, it was a great series my first time. Thanks again Matt Connors Back to results page
